I am delighted to tell you all that I am finally back!!
It was hell not having internet for that period of time nut so worth it to be in our new home we purchased in late July.
It's prime squatch territory and Im lovin it!!
We've got wildlife galore, and there are fields of corn , blueberries, and other crops growing nearby.
I listen and watch carefully for our forest friends.
Exploring All Realms is due to start again soon but due to scheduling conflicts we have not been able to nail down a date just yet.
We'll keep you posted.
I have some interesting photos and news coming up, so stay tuned for more in the coming days.

Max, a flesh and blood red-eyed black dog!

From the haunting Moors of England to the distant forests of the Scottish Highlands and the mysterious Isle of Man in the Irish Sea, the legends have been passed down for generations. Stories of malignant, ghastly looking black hounds with glowing red eyes that roam the wastelands and plod through ancient forests in the night, baying and howling and bringing with them a supernatural feeling of ill will and bad omens. Locals are often frightened to the point of staying in doors for days on end and crossing themselves with holy water at the slightest mention of the foul beasts. In the late 1600's hundreds and early 1700's, they were often associated with witches, either accompanying them to black masses or being one in the same as shape-shifting counterparts.
Even Mexico and North America have their versions of these creatures.

They are known by many names - Devil dogs, demon dogs, hounds of Hell, Black Shag, Black Shuck, Faery dogs, Ghost hound, "Ol' Padfoot", Yeth hound, Pooka, and probably the most well known of them all, 'The Hound of Baskervilles'.
The origins are debatable and come from many backgrounds and sources, but their descriptions have a host of things in common. They are often described as abnormally large in stature, black in color, malevolent in nature, and have glaring hypnotic red eyes that mesmerize, yet terrify any poor soul unfortunate enough to cross their path.

Very rarely are they seen running in packs or lumbering down busy streets. They are more likely, and have been reported to be, encountered alone in graveyards, dark forests, on sites where executions or murder have taken place, ancient burial grounds, and vast distant reaches of the Moors where escape is unlikely, but death from fright a distinct possibility.
In Tring, Hertfordshire, a fiersome black beast with glowing red eyes haunts an old road and is said to be the spirit of a local chimney sweep who was brought up on murder charges and promptly executed. It is said that the dog sinks slowly into the ground if approached.
In Jersey, the phantom black dog is known as 'Tchico' and usually makes its prescence known just before a storm rolls in.
Cape Elizabeth, Maine is home to a black dog the size of a St. Bernard but with a wolf-like sillouette. It is described as being a shadowy figure who lurks in the bushes and will block your path if you attempt to walk down the road it haunts.

Though most of these creatures are the stuff nightmares are made of, not all are considered bad luck or evil. In fact some, like the 'Gurt Dog' of Somerset, are considered benevolent and even helpful.

Anubis, the black jackal-headed god of the Underworld who is associated with mummification and judgemnt of the soul, is also known to safeguard the dead on their journey into the afterlife. He is also known as a fierce protector of children.

Now let me introduce you to my friend Tina's canine companion, Max.

Max is a Newfoundland mix-breed dog that weighs over 100 pounds, has a beautiful midnight-black coat, and stands an impressive three feet tall at the shoulder.
He also has an unusual attribute I find particularly intriguing. Max's eyes, when any source of light hits them including sunlight, will blaze crimson-orange like the fires of a freshly stoked hearth. It is definitely not Tapetum lucidum aka "eye shine" that causes Max's to look this way. It is a natural eye coloration he was likely born with. Though medical conditions such as conjunctivitis and entropion can certainly be causes for a dog's eyes to have an odd red color to them, Max is in great condition and has a clean bill of health, eyes and all.
And don't let Max's monstrous size and unique red orbs fool you for one moment. He is neither evil or dangerous.
Max is a gentle giant who Tina rescued some time ago from a shelter where he was passed over and unwanted by others.
Could Max's uncanny resemblence to the hounds of Hell be a reason he couldn't find his forever home for so long? Who knows. But it certainly is possible that Max, and others like him, could be the cause for many a campfire story and tales told on a stormy night.
I would like to think it was fate that brought him and Tina together. They're inseparable and are the center of each other's world. No greater love is there than the love between a person and their dog.

No matter the origins of these legends, they are indelibly etched into our cultures and heritage, and will surely live on well after we ourselves have moved on to the spectral plane.

My blog today is dedicated to my mother, Flora McCarthy, who passed away from this world January 25th,2007.
It is her birthday today.
My mother was my very first link to the mysteries of the unknown. She loved everything about anything paranormal, Fortean and unknown. She was very gifted and knowledgeable, and though she never sought a degree, she had more education in the realms of science and math than most people who make a career of them. We often called her "the human calculator" because you could throw a random mathematical equation at her, and she could figure it out solely in her head without ever laying pen to paper.
She had a way of just "knowing" things and her sense about people was always spot on.
I loved to listen to her talk about the subjects she enjoyed so much. Dad was a die-hard skeptic, but even he could not deny mom's truly wonderful psychic talents, and he was, along with all of us, in awe of the things she could do.
I'll keep this short, but the following story is one that not many know about because mom chose to humbly keep it quiet for many years, but it is one which I would like to share with you today to honor her.
Were it not for my mother some years ago, a little girl in Ohio may have ended up being another child whos life ended all too soon at the hands of a child molester. The man held her captive for several days in the attic of a house and gave her very little food and water. In fact she was severely and dangerously dehydrated when she was found by local police after many days of searching. The man also kept her tiny hands and feet bound with duct tape so there was no chance of escape for her, though she was just barely 3 years old.
A group of psychics worked together on this case and are also to thank for their input as well, so I dont want to disclude them in this story, but it was my mother who was able to psychically tune into street signs, the house's exterior, and even the man's description down to tattoos he had and clothing he wore. With her input of psychic information, they were more able to locate the area, retreive the little girl, and put the man behind bars, where he will be for the rest of his life. The child had to undergo several reconstructive surgeries and intensive therapy, but was able to recover and go on about her life,because my mother took the time to concentrate on this case and even go without sleep, so that that little girl could be safely reunited with her family and have the chance to grow up and experience life.
My mother was a very special person, who constantly went out of her way for others, though her own schedule was at best frantic and chaotic, as her and dad worked so hard every day together in his business as a cash register salesman and repairman. They were always on the go and I always wondered where all that energy came from. I admire both of them for their strong wills and determination to forge ahead no matter how tough times got.
Dad joined mom in the hereafter a little more than a year after she passed. I hope they are both smiling down upon me and able to be proud of the person Ive become and the things I am accomplishing, due mostly in part to their wisdom, guidance, and never ending willingness to teach me and talk with me about the subjects I love so much.
I love you mommy and daddy. Thank you for being my parents. See you when I get there.

Mass deaths of birds and fish : The aflockalypse? Or just another weird, incredible, milestone in biological history

At first glance, I too am inclined to look at the fish and birds perishing in great numbers as a "sign" or portend of something to come, but as a budding Zoologist and scientist, I take a look at the hard and true facts and put the puzzle pieces together bit by bit until Occam's Razor clues me in and I find the simplest, most likely answer.
What I know about animals already and have also been reading in several different reports, is that this is indeed a common occurrence and will happen periodically on earth, caused by sources such as weather changes, air pollution, disease, acid rain, and even magnetic fluctuations that throw birds and other creatures off their instinctive migratory patterns. Whales washing up on beaches is just one example of these terrible, yet natural, disasters.
It's all part of Mother Nature's design.
Now, are there things we can do about some of it? Certainly!
Pollution is definitely something we have within our realm to control, at least to some degree.
If we put all of our minds together for a solution, surely one will come about.

My main objective in posting this today is to point out that we should take care not to jump to conclusions too quickly and focus on paranormal or government conspiracy, when we should be looking at the big picture and focusing on the facts in order to find a solution, if indeed there is one.
Not that we may not find a paranormal reason or government conspiracy some day down the road. Those too ARE options, but they're simply not the likeliest causes, and that is my point.

Being originally from the Upper Penninsula of Michigan, this story definitely caught my eye and made me take note.
A ground fissure opened up in Stephensen, Michigan, after a loud "boom" was heard that shook houses in the area around it.
Ground fissures can be caused from any of a number of things including horizontal movements of sediments that occurs when water is pumped from the ground, gas reservoirs, and even collapsed mines.
But this one had the authorities scratching their heads.
There seemed to be no immediate cause for why the ground has opened up.
Trees are tilted at a 30 degree angle on either side of the fissure, and the fissure is already 200 yards long and the ground raised up 5 ft.
But listen to what this man has to say, and you may find that mysterious crack in the earth isnt so mysterious after all!

From whistles and whoops to woodknocking and tree structures, we can obviously assume our elusive man-beast is intelligent.
But what of his emotions and sex drive?
Do Bigfoot cry? Do they woo their mates? Do they turn down the stars and play their favorite Barry White album when they wanna "get their groove on"?

We all remember the flack that Loren Coleman took after his lecture in Ohio on the Big Guy where he, in passing, made mention(lightheartedly of course) that he wondered if a percentage of the Bigfoot population were gay, just as in our own homo sapiens.
It may sound silly at first.....but what IF?
If it turns out to be a flesh and blood creature, it is most certainly reproducing SOMEhow!
Reproducing,whether man or ape or something in between or related, means SEX is involved somewhere along the line, my little chickadees!
And if sex is involved in this category of sentient being, it can mean a higher rate of certainty that EMOTION is indeed involved in their mating.
Frans de Waal, who has done extensive research and authored books on Bonobos was quoted as saying in an interview "Same-sex, opposite-sex — bonobos just love sex play, They have so much sex, it gets boring."

The New York Sun in 1946 described Mr. Pinney as “a hard man to pin down” because of his myriad achievements. Truth to tell, he was just getting started.

He became a nationally acclaimed baby photographer, wrote two dozen books on subjects like caves and biblical animals, helped create the genre of television nature shows and survived to be one of the last journalists to have covered the Normandy invasion, in which he was wounded.

Other distinctions include making more than 160 expeditions to exotic locales, winning a prize for a short movie at a film festival in Cannes in 1963 and having a photograph exhibited at the Guggenheim in a 2004 show that included images by Henri Cartier-Bresson.

Last night's very first episode of 'Exploring All Realms with Redfern and Raven' went well. We had a couple of small glitches to work out, but overall things went smoothly and we were very pleased.
Brad Steiger was an amazing guest and we hope to have him back again for a future show.

With time, I hope to be more comfortable as I gain experience as a radio host. My good friend and co-host Nick Redfern made it all flow beautifully and we had a good time learning more about Brad Steiger and his various works in the field of paranormal and psychical research.
His knowledge, sincerity and endearing light heartedness made him a wonderful choice as a first guest and I think last night paved the way for a bright future for Exploring All Realms.

Last week I directed you all to a post by Ken Gerhard regarding the oil spill and how it may affect all creatures, known and cryptid alike.
In his post he had mentioned the giant and elusive Oarfish. For those of you unsure of what an Oarfish actually looks like, this article in from Sweden just today should give you a good idea! :

A "giant herring" measuring 3.5 metres (11.4 feet) has been discovered off Sweden's western coast -- the first such fish found in the Scandinavian country in more than 130 years, a maritime museum said Tuesday.

The Regalecus glesne, known as the King of Herrings or Giant Oarfish, was found dead in the small fishing village of Bovallstrand on Sweden's west coast, about 90 kilometers (56 miles) from the Norwegian border.

Michigan feral Pig FAQ update

For those of you wondering what the regulations and restrictions are in regards to the taking of feral swine in Michigan, I have provided some information below which comes directly from Michigan DNR resources. There is also a link to a map provided at the bottom of this post to show you which counties allow shooting:

Feral Swine FAQ:

What is a Feral Swine?
A Feral Swine is a free-ranging pig.

Is it legal to harvest a Feral Swine?
Yes, if you are legally hunting game during an open season (of any type) and see a
swine you may pursue that animal if you wish, following all the regulations of the open
season which you are hunting. (Please note: There is an open season of some species
365 days of the year.) For open seasons and regulations, please view the most current
Michigan Hunting and Trapping Guide.

What type of hunting license do I need to pursue Feral Swine?
A valid hunting license of any type is all that is needed.

When can I legally harvest a feral swine?
Any time during regular hunting hours and when actively night hunting Raccoon,
Opossum, Fox and Coyote. (Please be sure to follow all day and night hunting
regulations for the season in which you are hunting game. Refer to the current Michigan
Hunting and Trapping Guide for details.)

What counties in Michigan are NOT open to the taking of feral swine?
See the link to map provided below.

Why aren’t all of Michigan’s counties open to the taking of feral swine?
Feral swine are not defined as wildlife. Swine are agricultural products. Determining
whether a swine is a feral animal or a temporarily escaped farm animal is virtually
impossible unless the animal is marked in some visible manner. It is up to the individual
county prosecutor to authorize the taking of feral swine. Prosecution for the taking of
feral swine is still a possibility in counties where such permission has not been granted.

Can I shoot feral swine on private property?
Yes, as long as you have permission from the landowner and have a valid hunting
license of any type.

Can I shoot feral swine on Public land?
Yes, on public lands open to public hunting.

What can I use to shoot feral swine?
You can only carry with you the firearm or bow and arrows allowed for that open season
in which you are hunting. There are restrictions on the use of high powered rifles during
the firearm deer season, November 15th-30th. For a detailed listing of all the
regulations, please view the current Michigan Hunting and Trapping Guide.

Can I use dogs to pursue swine? If so, when and where?
Yes, except April 15 – July 8 (which is closed to use of dogs).

Can I use bait to lure swine?
No.

Can I shoot swine from a tree stand?
Yes, if you are bow hunting. Also, anyone who is hunting bear, deer, fox or coyote with a
firearm may shoot swine from a tree stand.

Can I use an artificial light at night to assist in shooting swine?
Yes, within the night time predator (Raccoon, Opossum, Fox and Coyote) hunting
regulations, while engaged in these activities. For a detailed listing of these regulations,
please view the current Michigan Hunting and Trapping Guide.

When I shoot or see a feral swine, who do I contact?
Department of Natural Resources: 517-336-5030 or email brownkr@michigan.gov;
Department of Agriculture: 1-800-292-3939 and press "4" for the Animal Industry
Division or USDA Wildlife Services: 517-336-1928.

Am I required to submit a harvested swine for disease testing?
No, testing of harvested swine is voluntary. Contact Kristine Brown (DNR) 517-336-
5030 or Dave Marks (USDA) 517-336-1928 if you wish to turn in a swine blood sample
or swine head for disease testing. Feral swine will be tested for tuberculosis, classic
swine fever, brucellosis, pseudorabies, and trichinosis.

I find myself yearning for the 70 degree temperatures we had just days ago as I sit here at my computer writing this blog and contemplating the adventures in store for me this summer. So long Moonshadow Investigations. I'll miss you.

It comes with great sadness that I tell youof my decision to move on from and close down
Moonshadow Investigations, the paranormal investigations organization that I founded and co-managed with my dear friend Jimmy Trick.
Jimmy is a great team leader and a very knowledgeable investigator as well as tech manager.
He will be moving on to form his own team that will hopefully include some of the members from M.I.
I have made this decision because I currently have too many irons in the fire and I need to simplify things, slow down a bit, and concentrate my focus strictly on my cryptozoological studies and investigations and continue on with my writing for the CFZ and doing work as an Intuitive advisor/ dream analyst.
As some of you know already, Nick Redfern and I will be starting a radio show very soon entitled "Exploring All Realms", and my time needs to be devoted to that as well.
Nick and I have some cool adventures planned, so please stay tuned to see what we'll be up to next ; )

MY two cents about the Gable/MQ situation

Good morning everyone.
Firstly, Id like to thank you for all the compliments I have been recieving about my part in the expedition for MonsterQuest. I had a great time out there with the crew and team, and learned a lot about being on film as well. (As some of you already know, this was my very first exposure on national television. )
The first thing I learned was that the camera really DOES add ten pounds, and wearing 30 pounds of cold weather and rain gear is NOT flattering to my hips and shoulders. It made me look like an offensive linebacker for the New York Jets! The Raven was not happy!
That being said......
Though I haven't read through all of my emails yet, I have seen several this morning that concerned me and I really would like to put my two cents in about the whole MonsterQuest/Gable controversy especially regarding my friend and one of my mentors in this field,Linda Godfrey.
While I understand the feelings of dissapointment of the truth being withheld for a period of time, I think we should take a serious look at the history behind all of this situation in its entirety, and realize that, while researchers and writers always want their public to know the TRUTH of the matters at hand, these things often take time to be brought to light a little at a time and with respect to ALL involved. And sometimes, our hands are just TIED. I give Linda a ton of credit for being able to delicately handle this situation and maintain silence about it until they felt it was the right time to bring it into the open. That doesn't mean LINDA was wanting to keep it away from you all for that long, it meant she was doing a professional job of keeping information "inside the circle" until they, again I stress THEY were ready to reveal it.
How many people do you know who can do that?
And to begin with, she didnt have any definitive proof she could just hand over to the public,anyway. She did the right thing in holding off and allowing things to unfold. She was put in a horrible position and did the best she could with it.
She is a professional in EVERY sense of the word. She has worked diligently to investigate, research, write, and most importantly,bring you all the truth of what is going on. And you couldnt know the frustration and heartache she probably felt having to keep this quiet for so long when she wanted so badly for you all to know the truth IMMEDIATELY.
Alot of people were kept silent, by the way. Not just Linda.
And just for the record, TV is TV, folks.
How it gets edited at the end of the day is completely out of the crew and team's hands. We had no more idea what was going to be the final product of the show than you did. We were all just out their doing the jobs we love to do and wanting the truth...just like YOU.

The fingers are definitely being pointed in the wrong direction on this one , folks!

Most importantly to remember here is the fact that MANY CREDIBLE WITNESSES have had experiences with creatures that defy orothodox science. One hoaxer's admission of a widespread prank does not devalue their accounts and frightening ordeals.

We are STILL on the hunt for the Beast, and each and every day we get closer to the answer of what is truly going on in our world.
Use discretion, analyze carefully, but remember too to keep an open mind.

I have to tell you guys, this was one of the most memorable times in my life thus far.
Those of you who know me personally, know that I and my family have suffered a tremendous amount of loss accompanied by overwhelming stress in the past two years, and this project came as both a healing intermission and a wonderful experience which I will never forget.
The film/production crew and everyone on the expedition were fantastic!
I dont think I have ever laughed so much in my entire life. What a great bunch! We had so much fun in between filming!
They have become a dear part of my heart and hopefully lifelong chums as well. I truly hope our paths come together again in the future.

As with any expedition of this sort, we also had our moments of frustration, exhaustion, and fear as well. But those are the ones we often learn the most from, so they have inspired me as well.

I hope this post finds you all enjoying this beautiful spring-like weather.

Mark Curtiss is a Moonshadow Investigations team member.
We chose Mark to join us not only because of his interest in cryptozoology and the paranormal, but because of his keen abilities and know-how as a woodsman and nature photographer.
Mark spends countless hours walking trails, and we hope he forges many new ones in the coming years with Moonshadow Investigations.

Coming soon : An update on the feral pig population and what Michiganders(and others across the nation) are thinking and feeling about the situation. In fact,posted below are some thoughts from a concerned citizen named Michael who came to me just a few days ago regarding crop damage in regards to growing populations of feral hogs down south. I think his thoughts reflect the general feeling of a sizable percentage of the population that has come into any kind of contact with, or suffered a loss from the habits of, these animals. Something must be done. But what? and at what cost? Here is what Michael had to say about it all :

"I sense this situation getting desperate.

Food prices are already on their way up because of the winter freeze.

Even the orange growers down here are spooked.

Those damn pigs are going to ruin crops all over the country.

We have to do something.

I think communities all across the country should get together and organize a bounty to be put on wild hogs and feral pigs. The money could be put in an escrow account.

This way, your tax dollars won't have to get involved.

Right off the bat, I can think of farmers having a vested interest, not to mention, anyone with backyard pets. I'm sure there are plenty other groups.

If you wait for GVMNT to get involved . . . . . .

Well, I don't imagine I have to explain this to you guys."

Norway spiral light a failed missile? Think again!

Many are now suspicious of the timing between this strange spiraling light that appeared in the sky above Norway and the testing of the LHC(Large Hadron Collider)

I have done a fair amount of research myself ever since this news came out, and I have yet to find one photo of a "failed missile launch" that even remotely resembles the spiraling light show that took place in Norway's sky just two nights ago.
As 2012 draws ever closer, I think we'll be seeing a lot of strange things in our skies never before witnessed.....
........ Things that will probably be accompanied by even more ridiculously suspicious explanations by the 'PTB'.

In my email this morning was this post from my fellow researcher and good friend Ken Gerhard:

"Last night - November 30th, police on the west side of San Antonio received a 911 call from multiple eyewitnesses who claimed that they saw a hairy, hominid standing over six feet tall, run out of the woods and kill a deer. The incident was reported to the local media and broadcast earlier today. The witnesses were apparently homeless and responding officers who interviewed them found them to be completely sober and rational, though understandably scared. The police chose not to search for the creature. I have just returned from a stake out of the area, which is located at the intersection of Loop 1604 and highway 151, about ten miles from where I live. The area is somewhat developed, although fairly wooded and located near several creeks. Most of the area is private property and is fenced with barbed wire. Obviously I was not about to trespass and I'm still not 100% sure of the exact location of the incident. Reporter Joe Conger from Eyewitness News did visit the exact spot earlier today and told me there were some animal bones present. I plan on returning there with him tomorrow to look for tracks and other evidence. Best Wishes All!

Thanksgiving is the day we come together with friends and relatives to share a meal and give thanks for all the blessings in our lives.
It's a wonderful tradition and a beautiful reminder that, even though we have all been through hardships and low points in our lives, we are also blessed with many reasons to be thankful.
We should also remember those less fortunate than ourselves. Reach out today and help someone in your community, even if its just sharing a hug and a smile. You never know when a simple act of kindness could save or change a life forever. I have every bit of faith we can make positive changes in the entire world by first starting in our own backyards and communities.
This incredible human experience has already taught me so much in my 42 years, and has brought into my life the most treasured friends and family anyone could ask for.
They have all touched my life in different ways and I give thanks for them not only on this beautiful Thanksgiving day,but always. : )

Charles Fort --Who was he?

If you take an interest in anomalous phenomena of any kind, then by now you surely have heard the name Charles Fort.

He is credited as the man who coined the term "teleportation" and whom the subject of Forteana itself is named after.

Fort was born in New York and although, even as a youngster, was considered bright and intelligent, did not do well in school.
He was known to be witty and humorous, and his natural intense curiosity may have been the spark which started his lifelong journey of sitting in libraries for hours, taking notes, and collecting reports of anomalous phenomena. Today, strange anomolies are often refered to as Fortean, thanks to a playwright named Ben Hecht,who was the first to use the word in a review of "The Book of the Damned" in 1919.
Fort was somewhat of a rebel, and was very critical of authoritarianism, especially in science and religious dogma.
He was adamant that he not be refered to as a scientist, and always remained philosophical in nature when discussing the subjects he researched.
He took great delight in critiquing the scientific community's opinion of anomolies, and gave lengthy comment on circumstances labeled by them as "myth", such as frogs and stones falling from the sky, and even occurrences of ball lightning, which have now been categorized as real events.

Fort characterized his research and data as "damned" because of the opposition it faced from orthodox science. He believed that all information must be considered "tentative" forever as it is subject to change at any time. He once stated "There never was an explanation that didn't itself have to be explained"
His views and reviews often infuriated his contemporaries, but it never stopped Fort from continuing his search in the fashion he was best known for.
He passed away at the age of 58, apparently from leukemia, though that diagnosis has never been accurately confirmed.
He continued his research and obsessive note taking right up until the end, and has inspired many to continue on the path of a "contrary to popular opinion" type philosophy.
The term Fortean has many interpretations, but one fact remains....
...it is as far from orthodoxy and conventional thinking as one can possibly get.

It makes our job as serious researchers SO much harder when we have to weed through the garbage that is put out there by these kind of people.
THEY may not take this subject seriously, but the folks who have been genuinely terrified by these encounters surely do.
Linda brings up some excellent points and sheds light on the consequences of hoaxing.

We arrived home at roughly 3:30 am this morning.
Things went well on the expedition, though the weather at times was rather wet and cold, making some moments more difficult than others.
A good sense of humor, awesome people(You guys know who you are), and lots of hot coffee got me through those rough spots, I am happy to say!
In a future update, I will be talking a bit more about where I was and what I was doing, but for now, until all evidence is reviewed etc, I'll keep you in suspense ; )

Paranormal vs. Flesh and blood

When discussing cryptids of any kind, the topic of whether or not they are paranormal in nature is sure to enter the conversation at some point, and is often a very heated topic of debate among cryptozoologists and enthusiasts alike.
Many sightings and encounters across the globe mention attributes of these creatures that lend a supernatural feel to the experience, whether intentional or not.
Some are surely misidentifications of known animals, inanimate objects, tricks of lighting or the eye, or just plain hoaxes altogether.
But for those few completely as of yet unexplained encounters, the debate runs hot about the true nature of the beast in question.

Tracks leading to nowhere, entities that seem to walk right out of thin air, some disappearing and reappearing in other areas. The list goes on.
Linda Godfrey wrote about an encounter where a cryptid was seen with only the upper half of its body visible to the eye. Accounts like these leave us with more questions than answers about our world and what inhabits it.

The Ojibwa have a proverb that says : " To find an animal, you must first find its food"
What if there is no food source to be found because there is no food source required for its survival? What then?
One can certainly see the rather confounding dilemma this leaves the serious researcher of cryptids in. With "unknown animals", there isn't a solid referrence point with which to begin the journey of discovery. One has to simply step into the unknown with an ignited passion to know the truth and the fervor to spurn that passion into action.
Science definitely has its place among this work and is a basic foundation with which to conduct investigations, but one should be careful not to pigeonhole themselves into a biased way of thinking.

Many options are out there, but none have eliminated the other as an answer...............................................yet!

THE BLOB!

A mysterious black goo described to the Coast Guard as "an oil-like substance, thick and lingering below the surface of the water" that was first spotted by a group of local Wainright, Alaska hunters out in their boat, has now been dubbed "The Blob" and is making its way farther from the coastline, much to everyone's relief.
But just what is this oddity?
The test results,released on Thursday,conclude that the miles-long stretch of oily goo is non other than a bloom of algae,never before seen in the Chukchi Sea,but not completely unheard of elsewhere.
So far,it has been concluded that the blob is NOT toxic, but further testing is required before that is an absolute.

Just wanted to let you all know that Ken,Nick,and I still plan to get the radio show going,but there have been a few delays,and the likely launch date will now be more toward September.
All 3 of us have a lot going on at this time,and we want to be sure we'll have the time and energy to devote to the show once we get things rolling.

Bigfoot sightings and encounters are definitely no stranger to the Michigan countryside, especially in rural settings where much of the backdrop is corn and other various types of agricultural fields.
Last night, my daughter and I decided to take a relaxing walk in the fresh evening air to get some exercise.
We live right on the outskirts of town. Nixon Road, in Ann Arbor, turns from suburbs right into farm country after our driveway.
As a researcher and a naturally curious person, I almost always have my nose to the ground, so to speak. And last night, I was very glad that I do that.
At around 8:15 pm, our leisurely walk turned into a mini expedition.
As we were walking and chatting, I happened to glance to my right and see a couple little scuff marks by the guardrail next to the road. Something about it looked odd, but I couldn't put my finger on it. To my surprise,when I looked closer and to just the other side of the guardrail, there was a very large footprint coming up the embankment of the small overpass and looking like something had taken a step over the guardrail and across the road, coming out of the cornfield that sits just off the road and down the embankment.(The corn doesn't appear to have started growing in this year yet as you can see by the pictures below)
Since it did rain earlier yesterday morning and afternoon, I'm thinking this footprint had been made fairly recently or it would've been washed away with the rain or at least more eroded than it appears in the pictures.
My daughter and I walked the rest of the way home, and I grabbed my digital camera and went back to take the pictures you see below.
If someone hoaxed these, they were in for a long wait, because the footprint was not easily visible to someone who doesn't have their nose to the ground like I usually do.
Being a small but fairly busy country road as far as vehicle traffic, I don't think someone would set up a hoax there. There isn't much in the way of foot traffic at all. Its dangerously cramped at that overpass. It's cramped to the point that in some areas you have to step off into the grass when a car comes by to avoid being hit. It just does not seem a likely place to play a practical joke. Whether this is an actual print from a large upright creature or not is anyone's guess. It could simply be a weather erosion pattern, a different type print that spread and faded, or nothing more than the imagination of a passionate cryptozoologist on an evening walk with her daughter down an old road in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Michigan feral pigs and the increased threat of Pseudorabies

As many of you know,I have taken a keen interest in, and have been conducting research on, the recent feral pig issues.
Though most probably escaped from local game ranches and pig farms, it is also presumed some of the wayward swine are making their way up from southern states in an effort to seek out more abundant food sources and take up residence in territory previously uninhabited by their kind.

Washtenaw(the county I myself reside in) is apparently one of the hot spots in Michigan for encounters with wild pigs.
MLive.com posted an article in September 2008 which covers the story of George Albercook, a Washtenaw county resident who had spotted one of the creatures and was able to snap a quick photo with his cell phone.

One of the mounting concerns with recent wild boar explosions,is that of whether they are a catalyst in the recent spread of H1N1,better known as "Swine flu".
While there has been no direct connection to H1N1,feral hogs are known to carry at least 13 different diseases,including anthrax, and tubercullosis.
Now, a new threat seems to be on the rise as the invaders make their way across the land. It is that of the disease called"Pseudorabies",which is another name given to the porcine herpesvirus1. The name pseudorabies comes from the rabies-like symptoms it was noted to cause in rabbits who had contracted the disease.

It is estimated that there are already some 4,000 feral pigs in Michigan alone.
Most of the feral population consists of a hybrid cross of domestic European pig(established here by human settlers) and Russian wild boar(most likely escapees from game farms),neither of which are native to the American continent.

The continuing question remains "What do we do about this?"
Since we obviously created this seemingly problematic situation,where then do we start to fix it so that panic and fear do not consume us as a population and cause "frenzied killing",as my dear friend Esther so eloquently and perfectly put it.

In closing,I would like to leave you with a little reminder....
The pigs themselves are not to blame,they are only doing what nature designed and intended them to do.

Has a giant snake in the Amazon finally been proven?

Well, according to the father son team Mike (73) and Greg (44) Warner,it certainly has been.
But before we draw any firm conclusions, let us look first to Jon Downes of the CFZ to put things into perspective.
We all want to believe,but in order to give scientific credence to anything "newly discovered",the facts must be completely in place beyond a shadow of doubt.
All we can do right now is hold our breath until the rest of the data is in.

This afternoon was my debut as being the interviewEE rather than the interviewER.
Talk about an attack of nerves,folks!
The Mistress of the Mysterious was definitely NOT at her best.
I choked!
Ok,ok......Remember the episode of the Brady Bunch where Cindy freezes like a deer caught in headlights and bombs the whole competition? That was ME! I said answers backwards,I stumbled on words, I misunderstood a question, and I even think I swallowed my tongue for a brief moment. Or was it Gene Simmons' tongue...Im not quite sure.

The truth is,I am so used to being on THIS side of the microphone ASKING the questions,not answering them.
It felt like the Spanish Inquisition.......and "NOONE EXPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION!"

But seriously,folks, I had fun on the show even through my more than obvious nervousness and lack of knowledge. I am still learning in this field and have a very long way to go before I could even begin to hope to have the caliber of knowledge that researchers like Ken Gerhard,Nick Redfern,Loren Coleman, JC Johnson,Linda Godfrey,and Jeff Meldrum have.
I did the best I could on the spur of the moment,and hopefully the next time(if there ever is a next time...lol) I will have more miles on me,and be able to flow through my interview with a little less nervousness and a bit more solid information.

Thanks again to Jason and the guys at Strange Frequencies Radio for having me on and making me feel so welcome. They have a wonderful sense of humor that helped me limp over the finish line with a bit of my dignity still left in tact! You guys rock!

On an afternote,I would love to put together an investigation with them either here in Michigan or over in Ohio,and report about it afterwards here in the Haven.

Right now I am still working on Feral pig reports and a couple more big cat sightings in Washtenaw and ssurrounding counties.

Big Things!

I know I have been a little M.I.A. recently,folks,and I apologize for that.
Between my new work,writing,organizing expeditions,health issues, and dedicating time to my family,there has been time for little else.
My blogging has fallen by the way side a bit,but I assure you I am doing my best to get it back on track on a more regular basis.

The Moonshadow team has some exciting adventures going on throughout the summer,and I will definitely keep you all posted on how things are progressing.

Cryptozoology is not just about weird and strange unedfineable creatures like the Dogman and Bigfoot.
It also encompasses a whole treasury of critters who have indeed been charted and are defineable,but end up in a place they are not common to at all.
"Alien" creatures if you will,such as big cats in the U.K. and northern Michigan and the Gypsy moth in Massachussetts.
Even certain species of plants can be added to that list like, for instance, Garlic mustard,which most likely found its way over here by way of European settlers who used it for cooking and medicinal purposes. The plant has now taken on a more destructive quality,however, as it spreads to more and more areas of the great and beautiful Wisconsin forests.

Most of you by now have heard the recent ramblings and rumblings regarding the feral pigs who have now begun making Michigan their new home. Like a four-legged oinking plague,they seem to be making their way across the entire south and midwest.
Reports abound of sightings,attacks,and even sport hunters having taken in "monster hogs"

But are these giants truly becoming a menace?
Some do not agree with that theory.
It has been argued that they may actually do more good than harm.
By way of profitable professional hunting excursions,the beasts could actually help stimulate a shakey economy here in Michigan.
I myself am not a hunter,but I know plenty of them. I grew up in the beautiful upper penninsula of Michigan,where hunting isn't only a sport or a way of putting meat on the table....it's a RELIGION!
Anyone else who grew up a "Yooper" will know exactly what I'm talking about.

So then the question is.....

Do we begin to think of ways to exterminate them and cut them off at the pass before they establish permanent residence? Or do we find creative and useful ways to utilize a new,possibly valuable resource.
A third option (for the animal lovers against hunting) could be setting up a sort of "pig watcher's" organization that takes you on a true life Michigan safari.
Yeah yeah,I know....Not as exciting as watching lions from the open backend of a landrover on the Africa plains,but hey,I'm having a creative moment here. Just go with it,would ya?

Anyway,I want to hear your take on this situation,Haven fans.
Tell us your opinion and how you would handle this whole thing were you in charge of the 'pig parade'.

Back on March 25,and interesting piece of news surfaced about a picture snapped from the popular Google Earth, a view of a rural road in Berkeley Heights township.
Apparently,several viewers simultaneously spotted the blurry little figure that is seen standing next to a star wars-type beam of light.

The Devil's Footprints

Jonathan Downes,who runs the Centre for Fortean Zoology,recently looked into a set of cloven footprints in the backyard of a lady from Devon.
He,along with his team of scientists,inspected the prints to see if the phenomena could be explained by means other than paranormal.
The footprints,which first appeared in the area in 1855,have been dubbed "The Devil's Footprints"

Ghillie willy nilly!

A possible bigfoot sighting in Jefferson County, Iowa has recently sparked a controversial debate about the 'Ghillie suit" being responsible for a number of sightings and encounters across the country,especially in the south west.

If you are unfamiliar with what a ghillie suit is, it is a type of camouflage clothing that is meant to resemble leaves,twigs,and other types of heavy foliage.
It was allegedly designed first by the Scottish to be a "portable blind" of sorts.
Snipers and hunters are the main users of the outfit.

Ghillie suits have also been donned for use in games and sports such as paintball,but are most often used in military maneuvers and training,and hunting in heavily forested areas.

Could there be a percentage of bigfoot sightings that can be attributed to these suits?
If you take a look at these photos,it's easy to see why it is,in some cases,the first conclusion reached.

The nearby villagers seem to think so,especially since several of them claim to have seen the beast with their own eyes.
This story came to me via an email group I belong to,and I had to take a serious pause for thought on this one.
Is it a trick of light?...A log floating down the river?... A pretty decent photoshop job?...or does a 100 ft. monster really lurk just beneath the waters of the Baleh river.

Snowshoes and Tulpas

I am eager to get back out into the forest nearby and begin investigations for a reasearch project Im currently working on,but alas the Michigan weather has once again foiled my plans.
The winter's majesty is a beauty unmatched,but it isnt the most convenient of pleasures when you're traipsing through it with 25 pounds of gear and no showshoes.
But then again,who ever said trailing cryptids was going to be easy?
This is definitely a labor of love and a work you have to have a TON of patience with if youre going to stick with it.
It is often very trying and will test you to the limits of your physical endurance as well as your cultural and spiritual beliefs.
Speaking of cultural and spiritual beliefs,this brings me to today's blog subject : The TULPA
In Tibetan mysticism,the tulpa(also referred to as a thoughtform) is an entity or object brought into being by thought and will. A creation,quite literally,of the mind. A thoughtform is created, via careful concentration, typically by a practitioner of magick or shamanism. But it is also believed that our world is being changed and formed constantly by collective intent.We may very well be creating our own reality.
When you were a child,you probably remember your grandmother(or a similar authority figure) uttering the words "Be careful what you wish for,you just might get it"
Well,according to ancient shamanism,Grandma was right!

There are... apparitions that make public appearances. Some of these are said to be the perceptible double—the etheric counterpart—of a living person who is undergoing an out-of-body experience. Even more mysterious are the externalized perceptible manifestations of something whose existence originated in the mind of its creator by virtue of that person's incredible powers of concentration, visualization, and other, more occult, efforts of the mind. In Tibet, where such things are practiced, a ghost of this kind is called a tulpa. A tulpa is usually produced by a skilled magician or yogi, although in some cases it is said to arise from the collective imagination of superstitious villagers, say, or of travelers passing through some sinister tract of country.

The concept of the tulpa was probably first brought to the Western hemisphere by a person named Alexandra David-Néel,who claimed to have created a rotund,happy little monk who later had to be banished(destroyed) because it took on a life of its own and began causing a bit of a ruckus.
It is the intent of the practitioner to have complete control over whatever creation they manifest. But,as with any project,things can(and often DO) go wrong.

Could thoughtforms account for many of the varying degree of cryptids seen in our midst? Could these tulpas be the explanation for creatures that seem to manifest right out of thin air,suddenly dissapear and reappear in different areas,or walk straight through solid objects in their path as if they werent even there?

It is this question,and many others,that keeps my passion for cryptozoology burning bright.

The Calling

I want to extend my sincere apologies to my readers.
The past few months have been quite challenging for me and I have not tended to this blog as I should have.

That's going to change as of today.

The spirit of writing has once again found its place in my heart,and Im back to doing the research I love doing.

The deaths of my parents and my dear friend in such a short period of time left me shaken,but I know in my heart that theyre all encouraging me forward and probably have been a bit dissapointed that my fingers have been idle all these weeks.

Each day is a new beginning,each moment in our lives a new adventure........

There are strange creatures and paranormal phenomena out there in abundance,and it is my calling in life to find out why they're here,how they came to be,and what their roll is in the grand scheme of things.

I may never be able to answer some of those questions.

Hello again my fledglings!

Goodness,how time flies!
Here we are almost to the end of October already.
My favorite time of year.
The leaves are turning color,the air is crisp and cool,and the crypto world is booming.

In Michigan(my home state),big cat sightings are on the uprise.
Cougars are becoming more numerous,but being "poo pooed" by the local authority.

In early October,a man named Todd Fowler set up a trip cam to see how many deer were visiting the area around where he had set up his deer blind.

Instead of a prized set of antlers,he got a snapshot of what clearly looks to be a cougar. But when he showed the photo to a DNR agent, he was told the animal in question was a "bobcat".

I dont know,folks. I think it wouldnt hurt for the DNR agent to get an eye examination.
In my humble opinion, the creature is a cougar.

The reasons for denial are anyone's guess.
It could be an effort to protect them... IE: 'If we convince you that youre crazy or blind,you are less likely to go back out to the woods with a gazillion of your friends to cause a disturbance.'
Or it could be that the DNR and other related authorities are horribly short staffed and cannot handle the task of monitoring them.
It could also be just plain ol control and misuse of authority.
Who knows for sure. We can only keep guessing at this point.
Til then,Im sure the sightings will continue to make the headlines and become wonderful campfire stories.

Regarding my lengthy absence

I apologize for being MIA recently,but I,and my family,have been dealing with some major life stressors.
A dear friend of mine passed away on the 8th of September and its left us all a bit shaken and in shock. I needed some time to close off from the world and let it all sink in so I could start the process of healing once again. His death came too soon after my father's untimely passing in June.
Also...Due to water damage in our apartment and a severe mold problem as a result of it,we have had crews working in our home from morning til evening for some time now and there is still quite a bit left to do yet. The carpeting all needs to be replaced and the painters are coming in this week as well.
After that,I will be out of town for a few days,then things should be returning to normal,at least in theory.
I appreciate your patience as I get things in order so I can get back to business as usual with this blog.
My friend Nick Redfern has also had some life stress of his own,so as soon as we get the chance,we'll catch up on things and I'll get his schedule and post "Where the Redfern Goes" once again.

My apologies for this late post but it's been an exceptionally busy week in our household. My daughter started back to school,Ive got additional work,and we've had plenty of family related things keeping us running in 5 different directions.
